Its weight pulled free too soon, dripping a caramel ribbon along the stone path. Each inch of floor grew glossy and slippery, enough to hamper steady steps toward the table. Determined, he tried cradling the sponge against his chest, yet the persistent stream still escaped, splashing over his shoes. After another round, he wiped the table with the kitchen sponge. Grey streaks appeared because the rinse water had grown cloudy. Carrying the heavy bucket back to the tap would steal minutes, and the surface might dry before he returned. His earlier spills now blocked the quickest route, a slick curve of soap that threatened another slip. Uma slid an unused tray across the bench and raised an eyebrow, hinting at cooperation without a word. Together they placed the empty bucket on the foamy track, palms flat against its rim. A gentle push sent it gliding like a puck, water drops ringing in the bucket as it crossed the yard. The same slipperiness that had tried to hamper him now carried the load with almost no effort. Returning was easier; the wet track welcomed the full bucket, and soap bubbles scattered as the rim bumped the basin. Grant dunked the large sponge, squeezed once, and clean water rushed over the table, washing away the stubborn streaks. The bucket still harbored tiny leaves from the tap, yet the fresh rinse shone clearer than before. Uma lifted the dense kitchen sponge to polish the edges while Grant mopped stray foam with a quick sweep of his forearm. They exchanged a brief nod and turned back to their separate tasks. A ribbon of diluted detergent lay across the stones, catching late sunlight in shifting bands of amber and green.
