Luna’s hand closed on warm air where the left handle of the seesaw usually waited, and a syrup-sweet whiff of sun-softened rubber drifted up from the bumper below. Idris, already seated on the far side, pressed both palms against a handle that smelled of hot metal and machine grease—the quintessence of playground scent. Their weight gap made Idris sink until his shoes dug into the scuffed earth, while Luna’s trainers hovered over gritty sand that carried a dusty, flour-dry odor. Between them, a stray beagle padded around the fulcrum; its damp nose twitched at each sour waft of iron. Luna slid her slim planner from her pocket, its pages still carrying the faint ink smell of morning notes, and eased it behind her as a cushion, hoping the extra centimetre would dampen the tilt.
The first shift helped only for a breath: the plank creaked, released a metallic tang, then lowered again in a slow arc. Idris shuffled nearer the centre, the move sending a quartet of short squeaks through the pivot that mingled like off-key clarinets. His backpack, smelling of packed fruit skins, slipped forward, nudged Luna’s planner, and the thin book skated across the warm wood. The gliding planner bumped the bag’s half-full bottle; the bottle rolled toward the fulcrum, sloshing water that carried a faint mineral taste onto the plank. Each touch set off the next, smaller than before, yet enough to wobble the beagle’s curious head. Luna leaned, savouring the cereal-sweet smell rising from her own bag, and trapped the rolling bottle under her shoe before it could wedge beneath the pivot. Balance improved—not perfect, but now both seats hovered a handspan above ground, rocking in gentle breaths of movement. Luna stepped off, walked to the nearby bench that smelled of old varnished furniture, and laid the planner beside her water flask; a light breeze lifted its cover, pages fluttering toward the shaded edge of the seat.
Translation
