"Check this nose mark," Clara muttered.

Jude crouched on the damp grass and rolled the dented plane between his palms, the pulp yielding under light pressure. Five other crashed planes lay nearby, each nose folded in the same jagged angle that resembled a tiny chalk-white hieroglyph. Clara unfolded a fresh sheet, trying to render a cleaner point; her thumbs squeezed the central crease until tension tingled along her wrists. A metal clip gave the nose extra mass, yet the added weight made her elbow wobble during release. The plane hissed downhill, then dove three paces short of the chalk circle, the crumple seeming to propagate backward along the fold like an underground subway tunnel collapsing inward.

They left the spoiled flyer on a flat stone and walked to the folding bench. Fraser, the adult timing each launch, swung his stopwatch in broad arcs, arms moving like a silent conductor shaping invisible music. Jude carried the ruler, tapping it against his thigh with every step, while Clara knelt to brush dew from another blank sheet. Together they traced a wider chalk ring, the rough powder scraping the grass and leaving white dust on their knees. A ribbon tied to a bamboo stick twisted lazily; if the breeze shifted again, any future plane would drift right. When the ribbon stilled, Clara balanced a paper clip on her finger, feeling its cool weight before dropping it back into the nearly empty box.

Crossing the slope a few minutes later, Jude’s shoe nudged the abandoned plane. The breeze lifted it, and it slid against Clara’s calf. Without pausing to think, she pinched the softened nose, opening it along the grain rather than across. The paper flexed smoothly; the earlier tunnel became a shallow channel wide enough to guide air instead of trapping it. Only one clip remained in the box. He pressed the last clip onto the nose and released the plane toward the circle.
