Six folded towels formed a blue-grey stack on one end of the laminate table. Six more lay damp and unruly inside Ruby’s tilted laundry basket near the table’s corner. Mom had asked her to move the washer load and finish folding before the dryers beeped. A thick geology treatise weighted the basket rim, stopping it from tipping when Ruby tugged at the dripping fabric. She slowly slid another towel across the smooth white surface in search of a straighter edge. The gentle slope pulled its corner toward the edge and unrolled her careful crease. Ruby pinched the fabric, refolded the rectangle, and nudged the stack back from the table’s raised lip. Behind her, Finn spun slowly on a plastic chair, humming along with the low thud of the nearby machines.
A sudden metallic clatter burst from the coin-change machine, and Finn’s chair stopped in mid-twirl. Quarters jammed halfway down the chute, forming a short silver column that refused to drop. Finn waved the bright silicone spatula he had carried from club, pointing at the stubborn stack with raised eyebrows. Ruby crossed the room in quick steps, leaving her half-finished pile behind the folding table. She carefully used the flat tool to prod the stubborn coins through the narrow metal cavity. Once the last quarter chimed into the tray, they flattened the crumpled bill against the glass door and tried again. The note had been accepted this time, and fresh coins were delivered in a quick metallic rush.
Ruby hurried back to the folding table, yet something immediately looked different beneath the fluorescent light. A thin ribbon of soapy water had escaped the basket, followed tile grooves, and pooled under the neat towels. The lowest towel now showed a pale smear where a pea-sized ball of blue clay had warmed and spread. Its sticky film clung to fibres, stretching like soft gum when she tried to peel it away. Finn stepped beside her, held out the spatula again, and they coaxed the clay free without tearing the weave. The softened clay left an irregular bluish stain across one corner of the cotton fabric. Ruby refolded the towel along a new dimension, hiding the mark inside the thicker middle. Across the bright room, the wall clock flicked its slim second hand forward with a faint plastic tick. A lone quarter spun in the change tray, turned once more, and slipped into silence.
Translation
