To give it more sky, Sam pressed the handle forward and cranked, but the reel jammed halfway through a turn. An earlier twist of line had stacked unevenly, locking plastic against plastic like two lids stuck together. Sam braced the reel against a knee, leaned back, and tried again, letting imagination picture a gentle lever rather than brute pulling. The knot shifted by a finger’s width, and the kite rose, but the jam still scraped each time the handle moved.

From a blanket beside a half-open sketchbook, Kay lifted her head as the line sang. The kite tried to sail away above the blue-grey patch of sky, yet her pencil kept moving. Sam had already loosened a thumb-sized loop to free the earlier cling, yet the reel caught again when the kite jerked sideways. The snag matched the first: the same shallow ridge held the line, so Sam angled the reel downward and eased shorter strokes. Loops began to settle a score of clean circles onto the spool, yet a sudden change of wind hurled the kite leftward. The pull rose sharply, twisting the overlapped layers until plastic rasped against plastic, then stuttered to a stop. Sam sidestepped along the cool grass, letting the kite venture forth on a wider arc that bled tension from the jam. With pressure easing, the handle turned; faint reeds hissed underfoot as the string brushed them. Sam was leaning back, waiting for the distant tug to signal the colour's return high above the moving clouds.
