A clean wet circle glistened on the tarp where the green paint bucket had been minutes earlier. Zelda crouched and slid her palm across the smooth patch, then scanned the crowded paint-supply area for the missing colour she needed to contribute a fresh edge to her section. The art-teacher’s outreach project bustled around her; brushes scraped, rollers made a muffled squelch, and a fragrant hint of acrylic drifted up each time someone stirred a bucket. At last she spotted the green tin beside a ladder, but a leathery skin of half-dried paint floated on its surface. She dug in with the wooden stick, yet the film only tore into drifting flakes that would ruin a clean line. While she worked, the midday sun crept lower, drying the red stripe that had bled across her boundary; the longer she delayed, the harder that mistake would lock into the brick.
A sudden tilt from an elbowing passer-by nudged the blue bucket next to her, and paint sloshed over the rim, sliding like a thin river toward the edge of the tarp. The glossy stream touched a pile of chalk dust, turned pale, and kept gliding. “Watch the flow!” Yves exclaimed, hopping back. Zelda’s eyes followed the slow ripple, then returned to the stubborn green skin clinging together despite her pokes. Its toughness had been blocking her, yet that same toughness might mask the red stain. She lifted the rubbery disc by two corners, carried it to the wall, and pressed it flat over the red bleed; the sticky underside held to the tacky surface. A quick roll of fresh green covered both brick and makeshift shield. Before the sun could bake the stroke, she peeled the skin away, now mottled red and green, and flipped it onto the tarp edge, blocking the wandering blue trickle. The green bucket that had left an empty ring now rocked gently inside that same circle, its surface paint swirling beneath the floating stir-stick.
