Mist under the Feeder Roof-

Story Content
English Original
A rolled paper bag of seed, a terracotta saucer, and a sketchbook jostled against one another as the bench plank flexed under Hana’s slight shift. She poured a narrow stream of seed onto the feeder platform, then eased backward, shoulders lowering until her spine pressed flat against the warm wood. The feeder had been crafted by a local artisan, and its smooth perch took her weightless pour without a single creak. Heat gathered around her forearms, and the same heat met the cool water she had carried inside the saucer; a faint shimmer lifted, brushed the shaded roof, condensed, and tapped down onto the fresh seed. Each tap glued grains together. Birds waiting in the nearby tree flicked tails, but the damp patch broke their rhythm, and they veered off with a rush of wings before perching.
Hana leaned forward again, thigh muscles tightening as she collected the saucer. She searched for a remedy that would not chase away every feathered visitor. The strap of her woven fabric bag slipped, so she hooked it higher on her shoulder, then slid the water dish beneath the bench where the wood stayed cooler. Returning to the feeder, she smoothed the clumped seed with two careful strokes, fingers brushing husks as lightly as wind. A second shimmer rose, slower this time, met the underside of the newly exposed roof, formed smaller beads, and fell as almost invisible mist. Only a few grains stuck together; finches soon hopped from branch to branch and finally landed, their striped wings a miniature masterpiece beside the plain plank. When the first beak cracked a shell, vibration traveled along the perch and loosened the remaining damp seeds, scattering them into usable gaps. Hana sat still, knees bent, calves steady against the ground. A thin thread of steam curled upward from the dish and slid sideways on the breeze.
Translation
