Only a hand-width of soap solution remained in the bucket, the surface already lower than the metal hoop balanced beside it. Olive crouched by the low table in the small urban garden, letting the dinner-plate loop sink till faint glare wrapped the wire. A tortoise basked in a bright patch near the ground splash zone, its domed shell catching sharp shadow lines from the fence. Olive lifted the frame slowly; a thin film stretched across it, swirling with bloom-like bands that drifted downward under daylight. Halfway toward the wind-shadow wall, a sudden puff of air crossed the wide open lawn. The flat sheet bent, trembled for an instant, and then burst without a sudden sound. Bright droplets glittered in the glare, fell, and pockmarked the grass lightly beneath her shoes. She had hoped the colors would stay long enough to study the moving stripes properly. Instead, a fading damp mark on her sleeve showed that first attempt had quietly failed.

She dipped again, carefully adjusting nothing but the slight angle of lift upward this time. The wire emerged a little steeper, and bright light bounced off the film like tiny flashes from clear glass. Wind returned in a weaker gust; the sheet quivered yet survived until Olive stepped around the bucket. A single bead slid along the lower edge, detached, and landed gently on the rim. That bead broadened into a clear ribbon, drained down the outer wall, and touched the tortoise’s shell. Startled by the cool stripe, the animal pulled its feet inward; the sudden shift rocked the shell against the bucket leg. The near-empty container tilted, sending a narrow stream over the lip toward the grass below. Olive shoved a flat stone under one table leg, stopping the lean before more liquid escaped. Even so, a pale thread of solution kept travelling along the metal side toward the grass, shining as it moved.

她再度浸泡，只把抬升的角度微調得更陡一些。框架冒出水面時，亮光在薄膜上跳動，像玻璃反射的細微閃點。風吹回來，力道較弱；薄膜抖動卻仍存，直到 Olive 繞過水桶。一顆水珠沿下邊緣滑行，脫落，輕輕落在桶緣。那水珠變成一道清晰水帶，順著外壁流下，最後碰觸到陸龜的背甲。冰涼的痕跡讓牠縮起四肢，背甲因晃動頂到桶腿。近乎見底的容器傾斜，細流越過桶口往下草地滑去。Olive 把一塊平石塞到桌腳下，阻住繼續傾倒。即便如此，一條淡淡的液線仍沿著金屬側面向草叢移動，邊爬邊閃光。
