"The clamp feels loose." Tess tightened her grip. She braced her forearms on the soft cloth while the warm golden hue of the magnifying lamp slid across the curved plastic shell of the novelty spring frog they were fixing. Earlier, Heath had unfolded a faded nautical chart to cover a sticky patch on the table, and that uneven layer now let the toy rock the moment Tess eased pressure. The rear wheel, recently dabbed with white glue, kept drifting off the axle because the frog’s rounded body refused to stay still. Tess angled her wrists, pressing the clamp again, skin tingling where rubber jaws squeezed back. The wheel was being pushed inward, yet a thin smear of glue started to creep from the joint. She held her breath, elbows aching, hoping the inner glue would grip before the outer film hardened.
Heath shifted his weight, trying not to jolt the table. A dull pull spread along Tess’s forearm as she kept still. The added heat under the lamp quickened the hidden metal spring, and without warning the toy gave a sharp leap, popping the fresh joint free and sending the wheel into one stiff bounce against the raised edge of the chart. Tess blinked; glue already skinned over the axle, so sliding the wheel back required a narrower fit. She rubbed its rim briskly against a folded strip of fine cloth, shaving off the extra film instead of cutting. "If I had pressed harder, the shell would have cracked," Heath muttered while turning the frog upside-down so gravity helped keep the axle straight. Tess lowered her shoulders, positioned the wheel again, and this time balanced both palms around the clamp, easing pressure in gradual pulses until the rubber lining hugged the curved body without slipping. The clamp that had wobbled earlier now held the frog without a tremor.
