The beetle’s dash made a resting ladybug lift into sudden flight, and its wings brushed the lamp’s arm. The heavy head dipped toward the uncapped glue bottle until Reese’s left hand guided the arm back into balance. Thin scratches on the ramp had darkened, a quiet record of each earlier slow test slide. He placed the truck where it had started, and the wheel now traced quiet circles, widening the groove each time it passed.
