Crayons rolled across the table’s far edge while Quinn shaded a sketch of the coloured glasses. That left Kit a slim strip of space beside the warm, honey-lit windowsill all afternoon. Three tall glasses stood there, each holding a vivid solution of water and dye plus a ribbed celery stalk. Kit had recorded starting heights earlier and now decided to embark on a bold gambit. He slid the sluggish turquoise glass a finger’s width closer to the pane and wrote the time. Through the magnifying glass, a branching vista of blue channels stalled below the red and yellow lines. Lines in the notebook formed a growing narrative of colours, numbers, and tiny arrows.
A sudden clang from the sink pulled Kit away as a spoon toppled into a bowl and splashed cold water. He mopped the floor with paper towels, rinsed his hands, and hurried back to the crowded table. Sunlight had crept higher, turning the scarlet glass almost golden and fogging its rim with soft vapour. A fruit fly rested on the warmed celery leaf, its wings vibrating like a tiny engine. When Kit nudged the stalk to read the ruler mark, the leaf twitched and the insect shot upward. The blur zipped past the cat dozing on a chair; startled, the animal leaped onto the table edge. Paws thudded beside the glasses, and amber waves slapped the inner walls in widening rings.
Kit’s elbow darted forward, bracing the turquoise glass before its rim tipped past the dangerous angle. Rippled water calmed, yet the dye already looked pale, proof that his earlier gambit had worked too well. If any colour faded later, the notebook note would explain the change, yet the stripes deepened again. He lifted the almost empty bottle, gave it one determined shake, and a single bright drop fell into the glass. No second drop followed, and the bottle felt weightless in his fingers, its work clearly finished. The bottle toppled onto the towel, and a lone cobalt bead rolled across the fabric toward the glowing windowsill.
Translation
