"The craft tables are full," Gemma said.
She nudged a dark, leaf-shaped damp mark with her shoe, and cool earthy droplets dotted the wooden plank.
A faint sour whiff rose from the spot, mixing with the woody breath drifting from the glass display cases nearby.
Olive pointed toward a glass case where a photograph of a limestone escarpment glowed under a narrow shaft of sunlight.
Gemma bent closer; her face floated beside Olive's in the reflection, both noses almost touching the cold glass surface.
The view had been taken decades earlier, and the print carried a dry chemical scent like weak vinegar.
While they waited for an opening, a plumber in blue overalls hurried past, carrying rubber washers that smelled like brand-new tires.
His toolbox bumped the queue rope, and a musky gust of corridor dust rolled toward the children.
Ten minutes later, one table cleared, and Gemma slipped into the empty seat, the damp mark now stretching toward the sink.
She reached for the amber ink pad, yet the surface felt chalky and released no smell of fresh pigment.
If the pad stayed dry, their prints would fade before the afternoon air finished curling the paper edges.
Thinking of the trail of moisture, Gemma followed it, discovering a small tin of waterproof green dye tipped beneath the sink.
The tin had been wedged open by a stray washer, and a slow drip perfumed the floor with a sharp leafy tang.
Gemma lifted the tin carefully, then pressed the dry pad against the pooled dye until the fibres darkened and smelled almost minty.
Olive prepared a new fern, its veins sour like crushed grass, and together they stamped the page beside the escarpment photograph.
Gemma pressed the leaf firmly into the re-inked surface, then lifted the sheet so Olive could see.
A crisp scent of fresh sap hung above the bright print, holding in the still air between their elbows.
Gemma slid the sheet onto the drying rack, and the green scent drifted after it.
Translation
Gemma
