“Why is there a sticky amber bead on the bank?” Yara pointed at the glossy droplet near her toes. Tess, her companion, steadied herself on the narrow ridge and leaned closer, the bead catching light like varnish on wood. Yara crouched, knees folding tight, and tapped it; the surface tugged at her fingertip with a resinous grip. She rolled the bead between thumb and index finger, noting a spiral that could offer inspiration for a classroom carving. There were no pine trees nearby, only rows of rice and the faint thyme scent drifting from Tess’s lunch pouch. A light mizzle thickened the humid air and turned the dried crust beneath their feet slick, so ankles braced for balance. Under the bead, a thin thread of water crept through the bank and bled into the drainage channel outside the paddy.

The escaping water pulled the mud inward, and the seedlings nearest the gap tilted as the level dropped a finger’s width. Yara pressed her palm into the soft upper layer, lifted a fist-sized clump, and slapped it over the hole. The lump sagged, blocking part of the flow yet leaving a shimmering ribbon that still slid through. She scooped a second clump, heavier where deeper soil held more moisture, and pressed it against the first until her wrists hummed. Water slowed further, but the ribbon survived, looping around the edge of her patch like a stubborn thread. A third time she dug, dragging clay from farther along the ridge where the mizzle had not softened the surface so much. She packed this firmer mass on top, pinching the edges together; the three layers merged, and the tiny channel vanished.

Freed from urgency, Yara pried the amber fragment loose and rolled it between her thumbs. The underside carried a ragged splinter and released no scent at all, unlike real sap. That clue told them it was hardened varnish from a broken mallet handle someone had wedged into the bank last season. Rain and time had polished the varnish glossy, confusing their eyes earlier along the narrow path. She set the fragment on the tool rest post, its surface still smooth despite the jagged edge. Three thick smears of darker clay bulged on the bank, each ringed by her finger grooves. Yara pressed the last lump flat with her thumb, leaving a fresh dimple at its center.
