Only three ladles of tapioca pearls glimmered in the warm bath, their number shrinking each time the scoop rose. Outside the glass partition, a sparrow landed on the narrow sill, feathers puffed in the amber afternoon glare. Owen’s elbows brushed the cool steel rim of the topping bar as he leaned closer. Ribbons of golden oolong trickled into a clear cup, turning the syrupy base a cloudy caramel. Each steady step across the rubber mat pushed faint heat up through his canvas shoes. The lever of the sealing machine waited at the counter’s far left, glowing under lamplight like a curious artifact. Behind him, Lyra arranged straws in silent rows, her movement a thoughtful gesture that kept the pickup shelf tidy. Thick steam rolled upward, slowly fogging the bright menu lights in honey-colored swirls all afternoon.
While Owen sprinkled ice into the cup, a soft tap echoed; the sparrow pecked the glass, then hopped nearer the pearl pot. He crossed to the sealing machine, pressed the lever, and the film tightened around the rim with a crisp crinkle. Returning, he saw that warm condensation had blurred the neat handwritten syrup labels beyond reading. To bridge the gap in memory, he sniffed each pump until a sour-sweet scent revealed the passion-fruit bottle. He added one pump, but the thick syrup sank and spread, turning the drink murky instead of bright. He poured a second ribbon of syrup, hoping the color would suddenly lighten and clear. Instead, the mixture grew heavier, almost sludgy, swirling in slow caramel waves before the ice cracked once. It looked like a time capsule of older, darker brew resting beneath the fresh tea. The sparrow’s tapping grew faster, rattling minute vibrations along the outer glass panel again and again.
Owen paused, fingers still around the metal scoop, and watched the bird’s bright eyes track the floating pearls. Instead of shaking in more syrup, he lifted the scoop high so the dark spheres glistened in the slanting light. The reason showed itself in the clear reflection: the bird mistook those glossy pearls for berries bobbing on warm water. Owen slid the warming lid across the pot, hiding the plastic shine from the outside window. The tapping slowed to an occasional curious tilt of the sparrow’s head toward the dimmed pearls. He set the finished drink on the shelf, wiped a circle of fog from the partition, and steam curled across his knuckles.
Translation
