English Original
A striped band of knots dangled from the bench armrest, long enough to span only half of Joy’s wrist. Warm lawn air carried a damp grassy scent that mingled with the sweet wax coating on the six coloured threads. A pattern card had been propped against the backrest earlier, and its paper edges gave off a dusty vanilla note. Joy braced the lava-red strand under her thumb, drew it over a lime strand, and tightened the first forward knot. Row six appeared, yet the left side dragged tighter than the right, bending the growing band toward the sun. Metallic tang rose from the heated armrest as she lifted the work to measure; five rows still remained.
A sour whiff, like pickle juice, escaped when the tape securing the threads began to peel in the warmth. Below, a quintet of pigeons stirred dusty crumbs, their coos forming a brief rhapsody under the bench. Joy pressed the tape flat, shifted her elbow closer, and hunted for equilibrium between shaded cool strands and warm ones. Two fresh rows appeared; the bracelet now reached nine, yet a narrow gap still showed when wrapped around her wrist. Grabbing the bead cup would loosen tension, so she leaned forward, letting her shoulder brace the armrest instead of her hand. Exhaling slowly, she slipped the final knots into place; the band twitched once and then lay perfectly straight and closed. From higher on the slope, the bench shrank to a charcoal dash on bright grass, while colour flashed along Joy’s gliding hand.
Translation
