Ribbed bark fibres rasped against Ivy's palm as she steadied a wire basket packed with orchid mounts beside the tropical bench. Above her, a drip struck the copper trough with a soft ping, then another, setting a quiet rhythm that echoed along the glazed curve. She began the short walk toward the mist chamber, yet a fallen palm frond sprawled across the damp bricks like a giant green plank. Waterlogged, the midrib thudded when she nudged it with her boot; the leaflets hissed as they slid over algae. Ivy had tried to drag the frond aside once already, and the soaked weight refused to move more than a finger-width before bouncing back with a wet slap. From the arid doorway, Pearl’s camera shutter rattled, catching the crisp stripes on a small zebra cactus while Ivy paused before the jungle-sized obstacle.
As Ivy lifted the basket again, the iron door groaned open, drawing a hush of moist air toward the cactus room. The invisible stream brushed her ankles with a faint sigh, rolled across the gravel, and fogged Pearl’s lens in an instant. A tiny crunch followed when Pearl shifted back, and the zebra-striped shadow broke apart across the floor. Ivy crouched; the palm frond’s glossy spine caught a blurred reflection of roof panes, and the idea arrived through her fingertips rather than words. The stiffness that blocked her path could serve as a stopper. She rolled the frond, ribs inward, then fed its broad blade under the gap where the rubber seal had gone. A slight tweak of her wrist adjusted the angle, and its soaked mass pressed tight without a clang, only a deep, padded hush. The airflow slowed; drips in the trough changed pitch, a gentle realignment of water inside the copper channel. A beetle on the teak slat tapped twice, then wandered along the still-drifting ribbon of cooling mist.
Translation
