Wren tugged a mint-green tissue sheet from the roll, letting it unfurl across the wooden wrapping board. She had already chosen bright tulips, and now she aimed to swaddle them before the stems warmed. A cool draught escaped the refrigerated display, rippling the tissue and shifting its edge toward the misting nozzle. The price had been written in pale pastel lines on the freestanding board near the door. A fifteen-minute cycle ended; a fine mantle of water blossomed and speckled the sheet before she could fold. She pressed anyway, but damp fibres clung to her palms, tore, and left a jagged window near the centre. A sharp inspiration of chilly air tightened her shoulders; the first attempt lay ruined on the counter.

She rotated the roll, choosing a deeper layer the mist had not reached, then angled the sheet away from the spray path. Her elbow nudged the ribbon rack, and a wooden spool toppled, bouncing off the metal tape holder. The spool crossed the floor like a slow drumroll. It rolled past a shelf of novelty vases and struck the leg of the chalkboard outside the door. The board shuddered, and a hollow note resonated through its wooden frame. Pastel numbers vibrated, and a piece of chalk slid from the tray onto the drip tray below. The tiny stick continued its journey, tapping a plastic bucket of daisies that wobbled but stayed upright. Wren's free hand darted after the bucket, steadying it before another stem could slip beneath the water.

The chain of bumps had slowed. Fine chalk dust continued to traverse the gap between buckets, drawn upward by the warmer outdoor air. She stepped over the slow stream of dust. Then she folded the second sheet again, keeping her wrists lifted so the fibres stayed untouched by moisture. The paper held, and she eased the tulips inside before tightening a loop of ribbon. When she looked up, the once-blurred price now shone clearer; vibration had rubbed away the chalky smear that confused earlier shoppers. Beyond her fingers, thin chalk dust drifted toward the open doorway in a pale spiral.
