English Original
The rope bucket hung motionless against the trunk, but the rope ladder beside it twitched under a quick blue-grey gust. Vivian crouched at the tool-hoisting point, needle-thin sunlight beaming through leaf gaps onto the plank she hoped to add. She had measured the gap twice, yet the new board still rode high along one edge. A series of guiding lines had been pencilled across its surface, but each nail curved away when the hammer struck; swollen end grain from the morning dew denied entry, offering only small splinters in reply. Vivian slid a plastic dolphin that lay in the bucket aside, reached for the tape measure again, and marked a shallower angle, certain the fresh position would release the tension. The next tap drew no bite either, and the board see-sawed, revealing silver ground through the slats below.
Wind thickened without warning. The bucket swung wide, struck the trunk, and a cup of rinse water left inside seemed to leap over its rim. The spill traced a quick path along the plank’s underside, then dripped through a gap; drops rang on the metal toolbox below where Dean continued coiling rope. Startled, Vivian pressed a palm against the board, felt the wood slide under the thin film, and shifted tactics. She unlooped the top knot to release a little more rope, lowering the bucket until it dangled clear of the platform. Next, she wedged a folded cloth between plank and branch junction, using the firmer angle that the cloth created. The nail heads eased through softer grain this time, and the board flattened until its surface lined up with the older row. The rope bucket that had been still earlier now traced a gentle oval under the platform, its lowered arc matching the steady sway of the leaves around it.
Translation
