A steady hiss escaped from the swivel chair’s hydraulic pedal. Quinn’s shoes barely touched the footrest as the seat sagged after the previous client, a landscaper whose boots still sprinkled tiny blades of grass across the tiles. Fresh clippings tickled Quinn’s wrists, and the cape’s nylon crinkled whenever his shoulders shifted. He glanced at the mirror wall: only the top of his damp head appeared. The stylist crossed to another basin, leaving Quinn alone for a moment. The counter sat higher than his chin; he needed the seat to rise the span of a hand so she could trim evenly. He pressed the pedal once with the ball of his foot; the chair lifted a few centimetres, then stopped. The gap narrowed, yet the reflection still cut across his eyebrows, not his eyes.
Quinn drove his heel downward for a second pump, letting the pedal sink under steady weight. Pressure grew along his thigh as the mechanism responded, lifting him upward by another notch. Grass from the landscaper’s recent lawn care slid off the seat, yet his chin stayed below the counter. He inhaled slowly, shifted his weight forward, and kicked the pedal again with steady force. The metal lever under the cushion had been far stiffer than it looked at first. Strain climbed from calf to back, yet the third push finally drove the cylinder to its limit. The chair rose the last centimetres in a single, smooth glide; the mirror now framed his face completely. At that moment the ceiling fan flicked a stray windfall leaf loose from the ventilation grille. The dry fragment spun upward in a tiny spiral and bounced against a vanity bulb. It landed on the comb tray, an unplanned decoration inside the salon’s ongoing seasonal ritual of sweep and cut.
The stylist returned carrying a towel warmed by the radiator and slipped it behind Quinn’s neck. She guided the comb through the lifted hair, now level with her elbows, and the scissors began their steady rhythm. Quinn loosened his grip on the armrests, feeling the earlier strain ease along his shoulders. Near the base of the chair, the ring of grass blades from the landscaper’s boots lay in a thin crescent, untouched by the sweeping broom.
Translation
