The fattest branch in the driftwood pile was gone, leaving a neat V-shaped hollow that caught rattling twigs. Faye heard their uneven clacks and crouched, her fingers sifting sand while she scanned the shingle for the missing piece. Foam hissed beyond, gulls looped overhead with crisp cries, and Vera tapped a plastic cup against her rising sandcastle further inland. A thinner rod finally rolled against Faye’s ankle, tapped twice, and settled with a low thud. She picked it up, rolled it once in her palm, and listened to the grainy scrape between wood and skin. The broad writing zone now lay open before her, stretching wide like a freshly cleaned chalkboard. Its mirror surface was broken only by the distant rumble of an overgrown seaweed heap where shell fragments clicked together. She had planned to trace a maze big enough for both of them to navigate through before the tide returned.
She placed the stick’s rounded end against the damp sand beside the trickling runnel and pushed. A clean groove released a sharp scrape that echoed along the shallow runnel nearby and bounced off tiny shell chips. Spiral after spiral grew outward; coherence emerged in the pattern as every bend met the previous line without crossing. A persistent wash of foam slid closer, whispering over her heel and wiping the lowest arc in one smooth sigh. Another wave followed with a louder slap, clear proof that the window of firm sand was shrinking. Faye paused, listening to the tenacious drip where the runnel emptied, and watched bubbles cling to her disappearing work. The stick hung in mid-air while she measured the hiss and counted how many breaths a circuit might allow.
Within that pause, a briefer plan formed inside her quickening rhythm of strokes and spaces. She shortened the stick’s reach and redrew only the center circle near her toes once again. Then she added four straight spokes until the maze became a compact compass rose that fit the shrinking board. The smaller figure rested three steps above the brightest sheen, and the next surge stopped short with a fizzing murmur. Light footsteps crunched through the drier band of sand just behind her writing space now. Vera called, “Looks different now!” and flicked wet sand off her fingers before returning to her towers. Faye brushed loose grains from the new lines; even the breeze failed to disturb their tidy depth. She laid the driftwood beside the rose and stepped back while gull calls stitched through the steady hiss of water.
Translation
