She pressed it into the sand; a muffled crunch rose, then a dry sigh as loose grains slid away. When she lifted the mold, the imprint sagged at once, edges crumbling with a soft hush. Faye set her half-filled cup down, and the water soaked a small patch with a quiet gulp. The forgotten shell-mold touched the damp spot by chance, so she pressed again, palms firm and steady. Moist grains packed inside, giving a deeper, rubbery pop when she pulled the mold free. A perfect ridged shell stood untouched, edges sharp as a bright coin. If she had pressed the mold here earlier, the shape would have held from the start. She was turning the mold toward Bram so the imprint caught the afternoon light.
