The paste brush tapped against the stone ledge, but a tepid stream mist still clung to Yorick’s sleeves. He knelt on the assembly ledge where the stone stored the day’s heat in a warm embrace around his forearms, and he breathed a tangy mixture of wet clay, sugary paste, and crushed leaves rising from the water. The slow artisanal craft of folding waxed paper absorbed him; every crease released a faint starch taste in the air, almost like dry rice. A thin film of paste had been spread along the bow, yet the side touching the warm stone dried faster while the opposite edge stayed tacky. Lana, crouched beside him, added a wooden frame and said, “Ready.” Yorick nodded, pressed the LED inside, and slid to the launch step. Moss gave off a damp, peppery smell under his boots as he set the lantern-boat on the surface. It glided a metre, then listed left; darker water lapped over the low rim and the light trembled before drifting into the reed bank and stopping.
Yorick retraced the cooling scent of paste and paused to devise a plan. Extra effort felt simple: equalise drying. He lifted the next sheet away from the heated ledge and balanced it on his palms, letting fresher upstream air, scented with bruised mint, touch both sides evenly. While waiting, he rotated the unfinished hull every few breaths so no corner settled longer than another. The paste thickened evenly; his nose caught the change from vinegar-sharp to mild sugar as moisture left. Once the seams felt consistent, he lowered the boat to the launch step, careful not to brush the moss. Lana steadied the far side without words. The hull dipped, steadied, and the current carried it past the bridge shadow. Inside the bend, the boat leaned again, but only slightly; a gust rich with earthy clay pushed it outward and the listing froze. A falling maple seed, carrying a faint nutty aroma, landed on the heavier side and acted like a tiny counterweight. The lantern continued past the boulders; its LED glow drifted downstream, and the seed spun slowly along the starboard rim.
