A pale streak had dried across the dome where steam once sighed, marking last hour’s leak like chalk on brown clay. Noemi crouched, eyes tracing the brittle line that snaked from the kiln’s crown to a loose corner block. The fire-raking zone still shimmered with warmth; orange embers glowed among ash heaps a stride away. Beside her boots, a thin clay plaque waited, meant to cover gaps after the soil cooled. On the food prep table, potatoes rested among a xenial row of banana leaves fluttering with each light breeze. An herb bundle, tied with grass string, lay on top, its crushed stems hinting at minty sweetness. She lifted the plaque and tapped it softly against the streaked surface, listening for the hollow tick that signalled room beneath.
Earth from the supply pile filled her bucket, though the thin handle disappointed by bending inward under the fresh weight. She carried it through the fire-raking zone, soles skimming ash, and tipped the damp soil over the cracked summit. The patch settled; the opening had been blocked by the new layer, and the plaque pressed everything neat and tight. At once the busy plume above the mound faded until only a faint shimmer rose, barely visible against afternoon light. Steam was her silent clock; losing that moving ribbon robbed her of the measure she relied on while waiting. She stepped to the observation bench, hoping smell might refresh her sense of time, yet almost nothing drifted there. The very soil that kept heat now hid the only clue left outside the sealed hill.
A thought flickered; she returned, slid the thin stick that leaned near the rake, and nudged one corner of the plaque upward. The gap remained narrow, no wider than a straw, yet a clean thread of grey steam lifted through it and twisted away. Heat stayed trapped, but the living marker breathed again, curling gently enough to track without stripping warmth from the potatoes. Satisfied, Noemi wiped clay dust from her palms and walked toward the prep table to wrap the last ears of corn. Near the rake’s wooden handle, unnoticed, a single warm bead of sap rolled under ash and darkened the scorched ground.
Translation
