Now Fintan balanced on the warm mound, his boots sinking slightly while he pressed a fresh layer of earth with steady steps. Thin steam rose through a narrow crack at the crest, and his hovering palm caught its damp heat. The leak threatened the even roast, so he lifted a scoop of soil and slammed it into the gap with a flourish. Beside the mound, Wade stacked empty foil sheets on the prep table, waiting until the surface settled.

A sudden clatter from the food prep table snapped both heads around at once, sharply. A hen had fluttered onto the foil pile, her claws scraping, the bright sheets slipping like cards under a dealer’s hand. Fintan hopped down, knees jolting as his boots hit the scorched ground in the fire-raking zone. Wade reached the bird first and eased it away, arms outstretched to guide the flapping wings clear of the table. They returned the scattered onions to their heap, foil sheets crinkling under their quick fingers again carefully. By the time the table looked orderly, barely three minutes had passed. Yet steam no longer poured from the crack when they faced the mound again together. Instead, a deeper fissure had opened lower down, and the surface around it showed a faint grey-white flare.

Heat leaked through that new line, so Wade grabbed a full bucket from the earth supply pile and heaved it over. Fintan climbed the mound again, thighs tightening as they lifted and spread the heavier clay across the stretched surface. A second bucket followed, its weight thudding against the dome before their boots packed it firm. Most of the escaping steam was trapped, and the hiss settled into a softer tick. The bench upwind offered a brief haven, so they sat and watched the colour of the earth lighten. A breeze slipped over the field and rolled a tiny lilac blossom across the warm soil until it rested beside Fintan’s boot. He lifted the bloom, placed it on a still-damp patch, and the petals slowly crisped as the mound breathed.
