A woody smell drifts over the mat. Xanthe kneels and starts forward. A broad gray block sits like a warehouse. She slides past it. Spot two waits near the window. A small toy squirrel balances on a blue car. The mat ripples here, and her knee slips. She steadies. Then she makes a tiny jump across the wrinkle. Now she reaches the far shelf edge.

She turns and heads back. Different pace now. Light rests on the mat. Near the squirrel she pauses. Waxy dust coats its tail. The dust already sits there. She crawls on. At the gray block she stops. A thin scratch runs across one side. Like the outline of a house. The other child taps a toy baker bear. The child smiles. Xanthe arrives at her starting spot. She kneels again.
