The entrance gap stood clear, but bricks on its left edge slouched inward under snowfall. Sullivan pressed a mitten against the leaning stack; damp crystals clung and prickled through the threads. He and York had already nurtured the ring for an hour, packing bricks until it brushed their waists. Each steady rhythm of scoop, press, and pat helped deepen trust between their halves of the circle. Beyond the fence, a stone chapel gathered flakes, and Sullivan's simple algorithm—two bricks lengthwise, one across—now felt ignored. York exhaled a white plume through his scarf and said, “Mine looks straight on this side.” Sullivan trudged to the porch for the bucket, returned, and traced a thin ribbon of water along the joints.
By the time he reached the moulding zone, the water had frozen, locking the left bricks into a glossy ice band. He packed new snow into the container, counted three breaths, then tipped out a fresh block with surprising grace. The block landed hard, sending a tremor through the ring that felt like a muted drum under his boots. A hiss rose from the entrance; meltwater from the pour had seeped across and soaked the right pillar’s base. That soaked snow crumbled when he brushed it, and the whole right edge now leaned outward as if bowing. Fixing the left side had weakened the right, stealing firmness from exactly where support mattered. Snow kept falling, thickening each pillar while the bucket surface on the porch skinned over with thin ice.
Sullivan waited until York lifted his next brick, then timed a shove so both children pressed the opposing sides together. Their palms met damp snow at the same moment, squeezing slush outward and sharing the remaining strength between both pillars. If the bucket had held more water, he could have poured a mirror line along the right pillar too. No one spoke; new flakes softened the wall top, yet an ice seam still glimmered where the fix had begun. Inside the entrance, a dent marked the spot where excess snow had been kicked away, filling slowly under the fall.
Translation
