The Stick Ruby Pulled from the Fallen Log-
Ruby

Story Content
English Original
Three short strips of adhesive tape clung to the cardboard core; the outer layers had sagged and turned translucent in the drizzle. Ruby pressed the roll back into her pocket and studied the fallen trunk that ruled the garden path–like trail. Steel-grey bark glimmered under a film of rain, and silver droplets slipped from the canopy onto puddles that quivered like tiny mirrors. She wanted a dry way across before the moss became slippery as soap. From the branch debris zone she dragged a thick limb, lifted its damp weight onto the log top surface, and nudged it until one end rested on the firmer strip of ground beside the trunk.
The limb sank slightly, so she added a slimmer branch for balance; water splashed from the groove as it dropped beside the first. Freya, gathering sticks nearby, hurried over and began to gesticulate with a twig, tracing imagined footholds in the air. “Try the flatter side,” she said, voice almost lost under the steady hiss of rain. Ruby fetched a third, knotty piece and wedged it between the others, yet the improvised ladder quivered with unsettling uncertainty. A flattened raspberry stained the moss under her boot, reminding her how soft the surface had grown. Just then a hedgehog shuffled from the gap beneath the root plate wall, its spines shining blue-black; the sudden movement snapped a brittle sound thought and made both girls freeze.
Ruby had already leaned half her weight onto the middle stick. She pulled that stick free in one sharp motion, and the outer two settled, their wider faces locking against the trunk like teeth of a zipper. Muddy water flowed into the space left behind and ran away down the groove, packing loose soil beside the log. Ruby stepped, balanced, and reached the far side clearing; Freya followed. Neither noticed that the drained puddle now showed a strip of firmer earth, a small accidental improvement that would steady boots for anyone arriving later.
Translation
