"The spotlight glares too much." Warren tilted his easel, and a sparrow skimmed across the shadow band beneath the rotating diorama. A thin film had been left across the dome by earlier visitors’ breath, so the wooden miniature of a neatly arranged woodworking bench inside shone only where a narrow shaft of light slipped through. Graphite dust glittered on his paper, while lively chatter rippled from the nearby souvenir stamp station and blended with the low hum of the turning base. He rubbed the dome with his sleeve; a streak stayed, bending the glow and distorting the lines he traced. A parent across the corridor photographed a display case, and the pencil box lid caught a ceiling flicker, throwing a bright rectangle onto the sketchboard clip.
A sudden chime from the public address speakers announced, “Gallery Four closing in five minutes,” and the corridor lights brightened. The sound startled the sparrow; it burst upward, flicking a quick silhouette across Warren’s page. His spare pencil rolled toward the café archway where the aroma of evening tea drifted. He chased it, and a tour group swept in, their delightful banter about ancient coins filling the passage while rope hooks clicked into place, blocking his return. Warren waited beside a glass case of tiny carved animals; a painted trinket no larger than a seed caught a glare beam and flashed. When the corridor cleared, he slipped back to the sketch corner. Heat from the spotlights had dried the earlier streak into a clear, hard sheen, and the dome now threw steady light across the model. The sparrow perched calmly on the rope, its outline edged with pale glow, while Warren kept pressing the pencil tip against the glowing outline of the tiny bench.
