In one sudden lunge the cat knocked against the fresh jar. The cool cylinder rolled off the polished edge, thudded on the carpet, and spun toward the bookshelf aisle. Nell followed the wet trail and, crouching, caught the jar before it reached the wooden framework that binds the base of the shelf to its uprights. The chase took seconds; the PA speaker clicked, warning of fifteen minutes left before lights would dim.

Back at the reading table, a thin pool of water had crept across the card while she was away. Pigment and paper fibers had swollen together, creating a marbled patch where straight lines once lay. She lifted the floppy rectangle; it felt heavy and cool, almost like damp cloth. A metal ruler from the supply cup offered a neat solution, its edge smooth against her thumb. She aligned the ruler along the widest colour bloom and pressed, tearing the card cleanly in two. The unexpected pattern divided itself naturally, each half holding its own storm of blurred blues and greens. Everett glanced over and said, “That pattern looks like spilled clouds.” At the checkout counter a minute later, Nell held the darker piece between finger and thumb, while Everett examined the paler half under the scanner’s steady lamp.
