Nessa patted the tabletop, then reached into the jar for a thinner round brush. Golden afternoon light slid across the tilted board; the upper third of the paper had already dried to a paler sky while the wet lower section showed a nascent riverbank. A pungent scent of cut grass drifted from the garden, mixing with the chalky tang rising from the rinse cup. Nessa loaded a courageous stripe of crimson and carried it through the burgeoning tree trunks near the drying boundary. The brush handle, swollen with moisture, squeaked against her fingers; still, a quick rinse and a lighter touch smoothed most of the ragged edge before the paper sealed.

An abrupt ding leapt from the kitchen window; the snack had been left baking, and its timer demanded attention. Nessa laid the brush down and dashed inside, her sandals clicking across the porch boards. During her absence, sunlight pressed harder on the sheet, and a brisk gust scooted along the table, shoving the palette until its rim bumped the rinse cup. Plastic struck plastic; the cup rocked, its cloudy water sloshed, and two clear drops slipped over the lip, landing squarely on the glossy riverbank wash. When Nessa hurried back, warm steam still trailing behind her, darker blooms spread like tiny islands near the lower edge, and the palette rested half over the cup’s mouth.

She paused, studying the new marks. The dripping continued, but each bead now emerged slower as the cup steadied. Nessa slid a folded cloth beneath the palette, lifting its edge and stopping further collision. The unintended blooms already carried soft edges, so she turned them into reeds; a narrow brush, freshly rinsed, traced vertical strokes through the damp pools while the boundary still glimmered. A faint tide line crept outward, proof that the area was moments from locking solid. Once the strokes ended, she leveled the board, and the gradient settled. Along the porch rail, slow droplets from the tilted cup now tapped the wood at even beats.
