"Cedar bundles line this shelf," Zeke said.
Waverly slid the slim box across the smooth counter, feeling fine powder catch against the ridges of her thumb. Cool air from the doorway brushed her knuckles, and each shelf near the entrance stayed dry and generous with space. She had planned to choose a trio of different bundles before the shop closed, certain the aisle offered endless minutes. A grey cat remained conscious beside the stone mortar, blinking whenever tissue paper fluttered against its whiskers. Near the sample-burning tray, an incense holder shaped like a kayak balanced on three small feet, its lacquer surprisingly cool. Her fingertips traced the ridged sticks, noting how their powdery coating left faint stripes on the polished surface.
After four quick sniffs—cedar, sandalwood, lavender, citrus—the scents tangled into one hectic ribbon, and her nose offered only dull sweetness. She checked the clock again; the brass hands had slipped halfway toward the hour, trimming the remaining time to perhaps twenty minutes. A small, low stand once serving as a negotiation table stood beside the back wall, its top crowded by unsorted boxes. She moved a myriad stiff packets from that stand onto the stone counter, hoping a wider surface might simplify her choice. The cat stretched, pawed the brass weighing scale, and the needle bounced, tapping metal with a light chime that stole her attention.
Realising the earlier measurements could be wrong, she reweighed only the cedar bundle, letting the others rest unopened beside the mortar. Her goal shrank like cooling wax; one carefully chosen scent now mattered more than the planned scented trio. She wrapped the cedar sticks in fresh tissue, pressed the edges flat, and tied them with the dark green ribbon Zeke preferred. The brass pan settled, the cat leaned back into its warm spot, and faint cedar thread drifted above the quiet kayak holder.
Translation
