Only four cherry tomatoes stayed inside the shallow tub; the bright rest already circled the lip of Clara's paper plate. The chequered blanket, caramel and cream, had been spread over the slanted grass, its uphill edge pinned by the wicker basket. Sullivan aimed to ladle hummus without losing space for elbows, yet gravity tugged every round container toward the downhill corner. Dimples on Sullivan’s steel bottle still showed where a spring hailstorm had rattled against it outside the school gate. A gust curled the mid-edge, flipped a paper plate, and olives rolled like tiny marbles. Clara murmured, "They are rolling away again." He grabbed a toy bison that lay near the dog’s leash and wedged it beside the wandering plate to stop the drift. The dog’s russet tail thumped the cloth; the makeshift stopper toppled, and the olives resumed their slow escape.
When Clara leaned to pour juice, the ridge beneath the cloth urged the cups downhill and clinked the cutlery. Sullivan slid the bison back, then pressed a palm-sized stone beside it to eliminate barriers that let food roll. Clara trapped the leash under her heel so the dog stayed still, and their quiet teamwork let them communicate without words. They turned each plate ninety degrees; edges now rested against the uphill basket, the tiny change offering firmer support. The shift needed only a small expenditure of energy, yet snacks finally paused while honey light broadened across the centre flat. Suddenly the basket lid, loosened during their shuffling, swung shut and locked the serving spoon inside the wicker cage.
Hours later, long after the pair had walked home, the blanket lay folded on the bench. Crumbs dotted the wood, and a faint square of flattened grass marked where the picnic had rested, its pattern already fading under mellow evening light. A puff of wind lifted one loose thread from the folded cloth, then let it settle again beside the silent plastic bison.
Translation
