The sharp scent of wet cedar drifted up from the fence post as Rosa paused on the garden path. Backlit by a low sun, the spider web between post and oak branch blazed with prismatic radiance; each dewdrop worked like a tiny lens. Seldom had dawn offered such brilliance, and curiosity tugged her closer. Elbows braced on the rough wood, she traced a finger through chilled air, stopping a hair’s breadth from the nearest strand. What captured her most was the quiet resonance running along the silk whenever a droplet shivered free and fell onto the leaf below.
Two evenings earlier, lamplight had glimmered across her desk while thin bamboo sticks clicked together into a small geodesic frame. The project—meant to cradle a marble once finished—kept tipping until she added a triangular brace, and the sudden stability fed her fascination. Hand still steady from that work, she blew across the empty glass container beside her, checking for dust that might dull the marble’s shine later. A moth fluttered through the open window, its wings scattering tiny shadows over the half-built dome before vanishing again.
Back in the garden, Rosa shifted her stance; her back, still damp from the grass, pressed lightly against the cedar. As though the silk were a harp string, she lifted a twig and nudged a single radial thread, hoping to coax a clearer rainbow from the droplet line. The web flexed, refused to break, yet the colors fled when a passing cloud muffled the sun. She lowered the twig, uncertainty halting her next move, and glanced at the leaf where the earlier droplet had landed. Another bead followed, tapping the same spot; the rhythm matched her slow heartbeat, and she waited rather than touched the web again.
Morning brightened. Rosa unclipped the glass container from her belt and held it beneath the sagging spiral, aiming to catch one jewel of water before warmth stole the show. A faint crack, nothing more than the branch settling, startled a sparrow nearby; its quick departure pushed a gust that jarred the silk. Several droplets slid at once, splashing against the container’s rim while one bounced onto her sleeve. Sleeve speckled, hand cooled, she smiled without a word and let the glass hang empty. The sun cleared the cloud, the web flashed anew, and the sharp scent of wet cedar settled lower, mingling with rising heat.
