Max nudged the narrow sun-room door open and stepped onto warm floorboards.

Directly ahead, a glass terrarium curved like a pocket planet; through the rounded wall he saw volcanic gravel dark as cooled magma, moss islands glowing where afternoon light slanted in. A single droplet clung to the inside surface, trembling on the verge of release, its brightness swelling with every heartbeat. Above it, a maidenhair frond pressed toward the warmth, its tip tracing a faint arc each time the shelf creaked under Max’s shifting weight.

Further along the curve, tiny beads formed and rolled downward, one after another, until they met the moss with a faint tick. Rarely had the sealed garden looked so busy. Max’s diligent inspection followed each bead, and a pattern emerged: every place a droplet landed, the moss deepened in colour while the neighbouring patch stayed dull. The fern’s reaching tip, now almost touching the glass, appeared in jeopardy of blocking the light that fed those lively points. He set a fingertip against the cool side, then drew back when his breath fogged the view.

Another minute passed; droplet after droplet followed the same path, thicker now, until the curve of the meniscus magnified something below—a pale, angular speck caught among moss strands. Max leaned closer. What held his gaze was the delicate outline of a leafhopper, no larger than a fingernail, its hollow shell preserved like carved parchment. His thumb still on the jar, he paused, unsure whether movement might blur the watery lens and lose the tiny relic. The droplet swelled again, and, almost without thought, he turned the terrarium a fraction, angling the glass so the light struck the shell directly. The insect’s ridged back glittered, and the moss beneath revealed pale shoots previously hidden in shadow.

The first droplet, freed by the tilt, skimmed sideways, burst against the glass, and vanished into mist. New beads immediately gathered along a fresh route, mapping a different future for moisture and light inside the jar. Max slid the terrarium a hand-span deeper into the bright stripe crossing the shelf.

又過了一分鐘，水珠愈加粗大地沿同一路徑下滑，直到彎曲的弦月形水面放大了下方某個淡色小角點——那是苔蘚間被保存的葉蟬外殼，大小不過指甲。麥克湊得更近。真正攫住他目光的，就是那薄如羊皮紙的精細輪廓。大拇指仍貼著瓶身，他停頓一下，擔心動作會讓水鏡模糊而失去這微小遺跡。水珠再次膨脹，他幾乎下意識地把生態瓶微微轉向，讓光線直接照射那外殼。昆蟲背部的脊紋閃閃發亮，底下苔蘚也顯露先前被陰影遮住的淺色嫩芽。

最初那顆水珠因瓶身轉動而滑向一旁，在玻璃上碎裂，消散成霧。新的小珠立刻沿著全新路徑聚成，重新繪出瓶內水分與光線的未來。麥克把生態瓶向光帶深處推了半個手掌的距離。
