Celina set her boot on the stone edge and counted finger-widths between stripe and water, trying to spot what had changed since last summer. Hardly had Celina lashed the bow rope before Nadine called across the deck, pointing at a fresh crack near the sill. Subsidence, perhaps, pressed the oak gate against its groove, and the beam waited, heavier than she remembered. Still, she placed the windlass on the spindle, intent on coaxing the paddle gear into motion.

The handle turned three times, then stalled; rusty teeth rasped beneath, resisting her weight like a stubborn mule on the towpath. What slowed her was the swollen wood wedged against the frame, water pushing from the far side and locking everything in a reluctant matrix of pressure and grain. While she rubbed the hinge in tight circles, the cabin door swung like a slow pendulum, each pass catching sunlight that scattered across the canal in a drifting glitter. Beyond the bridge a short flotilla of day-hire boats waited, engines coughing softly. Their small wakes bumped the bank, a slope still scarred by an old landslide, earth now tufted with grass. As the wake reached the lock mouth, ripples ran across the chamber, and water climbed a finger higher against the broken moss stripe. Celina paused mid-polish, cloth suspended; the cloth’s circular sweep echoed the ripples, and her eyes tracked both patterns. She turned toward the gate, leaving the hinge half bright, water still beading on its brass edge.

Her boots clicked over deck boards and met the balance beam again; the water had settled, yet its surface rested two inches higher than before. No force pressed against the gate now; earlier pressure had slipped away in those passing swells, and the windlass socket waited quietly. Hands still damp from the cloth, she fitted the handle and felt the gear teeth engage with a muted clack. She moved as though the oak were paper, the paddle lifting on the first slow arc. Behind her, the once-pale moss stripe lay submerged, a wavering green ribbon lost beneath the darker gloss of rising water.
