Warmth lifted from the tide pool in delicate swirls, loosening a faint haze above the water. Lucia balanced her sketchbook on one knee, steadying it against a sun-warmed stone. Briny bitterness touched her lips when a drifting mist settled, and she tasted the sea without meaning to. Near her ankle, a slim pinnacle of basalt cast a wavering shadow over the page, darkening half the drawing whenever the breeze paused. She wanted the spiral of a whelk exactly right; that was the goal she set for the long noon. Pencil hovered, graphite tip catching glints, yet reflections skated across the surface, stealing the shell’s outline each time she prepared a stroke.
Below that shimmering lid, a hermit crab tugged its chipped shell along an algae-slick ledge. The water felt thicker than the morning flow; sunlight had warmed the shallow bowl, and salt concentrated until even the anemones contracted slightly. A loose faction of barnacles crowded the rim like stubborn spectators, leaving only a narrow lane for the crab’s passage. A dart of silver fish startled it, and the shell rasped against stone, scattering a powdery puff of silt that drifted upward. Ripples slapped the warm rock, tilted, and returned; inside the shifting light, the crab tested another route, claws probing crevices that promised shade but proved too tight.
Above the pool, Lucia’s hand hovered again, then settled lower as she changed her angle, knees inching closer to the wetted rim. She once trusted her knack for quick lines, yet each glare-warped contour refused cooperation, and graphite smudged across her palm. “You look still enough, little one,” she whispered toward the glinting whelk, though the creature offered no reply. A sudden crescendo of surf rolled across the outer shelf; the vibration tremored through stone and jolted her elbow, sending a droplet from her brush cup onto the paper. She paused, breaths shallower, and rotated the sketchbook so the stain formed the shell’s shaded side instead of ruining the whole spiral.
Below, the sudden shadow of Lucia’s rotating page spread like a pale cloud, confusing the hermit crab. It veered away from the crowded barnacle wall and clambered onto the basalt pinnacle’s submerged foot, placing itself exactly beneath the fresh bloom of shade. From above, Lucia noticed the rearranged pattern of movement and, without lifting her pencil, traced the crab’s silhouette where the whelk had been. The drawing shifted course, and the scene inside the pool shifted with it—two patterns folding into one. A cooler gust crossed the ledge; warmth that once spiraled upward thinned, and the haze broke apart in clean, transparent ribbons that drifted seaward.
Translation
