The spoke-shadow had crept past the knothole by a hand’s breadth—half the morning, Tara guessed—when a swallow darted through the open loading door, skimming the warm flour fog. The bird looped once beneath the rafters, its call cutting through the hush between wheel groans and stone scrape, then settled on the hopper’s rim. A fleck of dried meadow grass clung to its breast. A purplish thread, lighter than dust, drifted down: larkspur filament snagged during some distant flutter above summer fields. Tara watched; the fragment landed on a burlap sack and vanished into the pale powder. The wheel resumed its steady rhythm, water hissing outside, yet the echo of the swallow’s sharp chirp lingered like trace evidence that air could still surprise the room.

She turned back to the lever that adjusted the millstones. Overnight dampness had swollen the timber; the bar resisted, groaning louder than the wheel itself. Tara braced both hands, pressed; the gap narrowed a fraction, but the runner stone answered with a judder that rattled grain from the hopper before jamming again. A thin flurry spilled across the lip, then stopped, as if withheld by an invisible knot. Arlo leaned over the sack-table. “Runner’s chewing instead of singing,” he muttered, then moved away. She wiped her palms, flexed her shoulders, and paused; the swallow basked in a shaft of bright motes that spun round its wings. One breath later, she stepped away, leaving the lever stiff in its socket, and reached instead for an empty sack lying folded near the door.

Filling sacks gave no resistance: scoop, pour, knot, repeat. The rhythm differed from the wheel’s deep pulse, yet something about the alternating weight reminded her of the swallow’s glide and stall. Each time she heaved a sack upright, flour settled inside with a muffled thud, echoing the moment water met empty bucket outside. A new sound slipped in: the swallow beating upward, dropping another sliver of purple onto the timber. Two, three, four—almost a pattern. Tara’s hand stilled mid-knot; she noted that every fragment fell during the wheel’s slower sweep. The river ran high today; the wheel turned faster than usual, but the stones lagged. Perhaps the swollen lever demanded a variant approach, not brute force.

She set the half-filled sack aside, crossed the floor, and pressed her ear against the oak shaft. The hum told its story: water strong, coupling true, only the stone gap misaligned. Tara wrapped both hands around the lever once more, but instead of pulling, she rocked it with small pulses timed to the swallow’s short wingbeats. On the third pulse, the swollen wood yielded; the runner stone spun free, releasing a soft, continuous whisper of grain. Arlo, stacking sacks against the far wall, glanced over but kept silent; only his eyebrows lifted as the hush inside the mill shifted to a calmer cadence. The swallow, startled by the sudden steadiness, flicked through the loading door and vanished into sunlight. Tara held the lever a moment longer, sensing the wheel’s echo settle through the beam beneath her boots. Tara slid the hopper lid closed.

Translation
