Copper Plate Under the Heavy Press-

English Original
Sara dragged the blunt stylus across the dark wax, the copper glinting in thin bright threads that refused to suggest the heavy lift of a heron’s wing. She paused, rolled her wrist, and tried again; the tool glided too easily, carving another shallow curve that looked weightless on the mottled surface. A faint tap from the press’s iron framework echoed behind her, yet the drawing stayed silent. She blew the wax crumbs away, pressed her fingertips against the plate to judge its cool steadiness, then set the stylus down with a click. Her shoulders dipped; the line still lacked the downward pull she pictured. She turned toward the bench’s clutter without removing the plate from its cradle.
Sheets of damp paper waited in a covered tray, edges sagging under their own ballast. Sara lifted one to test its readiness, and water shimmered before sliding toward a corner, gathering momentum that bent the sheet like a slow wave. Nearby, a jar of ink wore a thin puckered skin, mottled brown and black; she peeled the film and folded it between finger and thumb. The scrap felt surprisingly light beside the dense paper drooping from her grip. Without planning, she straightened a small cardboard construct she had built to prop the blankets, pressing its joints until they squared. Routine movements steadied her breath; the paper’s gentle arc lingered in her palm like an unspoken suggestion.
She returned to the plate and, instead of tracing another outline, tilted the stylus and pressed its flat edge into the wax, letting gravity drag the stroke. The line widened, then narrowed where her hand rose, echoing the bowed paper. Hartley glanced along the carved decor of the oak press frame and spoke without raising his voice, “Ready for a pull?” Sara nodded, slid the plate to him, and watched through the glass screen while he lowered it into the acid bath. Exposed copper deepened to burnt sienna; coated fields stayed bright. When the rinsed plate returned, she rolled ink across it, wiped the surface clean, and centered it beneath the felt blankets.
The crank resisted; then the heavy roller settled, and the handle swung forward in a measured rhythm, hauling plate and paper through the press’s chilled ribs. Sara’s knuckles whitened, yet her grip loosened once the stack cleared the cylinder. The damp sheet now hid the fresh image, pressed flat against copper under the blankets’ weight. Steam from soaked fibers drifted in a narrow plume between bench and ceiling. She waited, one hand hovering above the handle, as droplets slid from the paper’s underside to the tray below. Whether the revised stroke captured the heron’s burden or offered another weightless curve would stay unknown until the paper cooled and the corner lifted itself free.
Translation
