English Original

Every Saturday, Maren sketched birds on paper at the kitchen table; today a blunt stylus waited on dark, resin-scented wax at the etching bench.

She set her hand the way she always did, and the first line opened bright copper; tiny ribbons of wax curled like a tendril, gathering at the tip.

She brushed the curl aside with a fingernail, then tried a finer stroke; the stylus glided, then dragged for a heartbeat, so her fingers lightened.

A jay took shape in shallow paths: a round eye, a neat beak, a quick cluster for the crest, each mark making the copper wink through.

“It's smooth,” Maren said, shifting the stylus to its flat edge to widen one feather and finding the wax gave more slowly than paper ever had.

Beeswax and turpentine warmed the air while the bench’s wood pressed steady under her wrists, its grain catching at her sleeves when she leaned in.

High on the wall, a small framed honour from a school fair hung above the drying racks, its ribbon slightly faded where sun reached it.

Flora lifted the copper plate and walked to the protective glass; Maren stepped close, her breath staying short of the pane while bare copper lines darkened inside.

The coated areas remained calm; only the bright drawing seemed to deepen, as if the image remembered itself more strongly with every slow moment that passed.

When the plate came back rinsed and clean, grooves traced the jay where the wax had opened, shallow yet certain beneath Maren’s exploring fingertip and pause.

Flora set a magnanimous scoop of ink on the metal, and the rubber roller pressed it into the grooves with a tacky, peeling sound on each pass.

Maren rubbed the surface with a soft cloth until the copper shone; ink clung only to channels, and the plate weighed a touch heavier in her hands.

They carried it to the small press; dampened paper waited cool and limp in the tray, and the felt blankets lay folded like thick, patient quilts.

“I can hold the edge,” Maren said, laying the sheet over the plate, her shoulders lowering as the paper settled, its surface slick as a new leaf.

The bobble on her hat slipped forward and tapped the damp sheet; the paper dipped slightly, and her fingers stopped mid-lay with the corner hovering.

Flora’s palm met the nearest margin; two hands held the sheet flat again, a breath keeping still before the felt blankets fell in a tidy stack.

The crank turned under Maren’s grip—heavy at the first bite, even through the middle where paper pressed into every groove, then easier as the roller cleared.

Iron stayed cool against her skin while the handle grew warm; the bench quieted to the soft whisper that came when damp fibres lifted from copper.

She peeled the print, and the jay faced the other way; lines that had been grooves now stood raised in ink, the crest crisp where tilts had widened it.

Maren set the print beside the plate and rotated the plate once, her index finger tracing air along the reversed beak before reaching for another sheet.

“Another?” Flora said, already re-inking the grooves while the first print breathed on the rack, its edges curling upward by a finger’s width.

On the far shelf, the white wiping rag lay marbled with grey where so much careful rubbing had gone. The bobble on her hat carried a thin blue smear.

Translation
