Ned coaxed the brass escape wheel onto its pivot, the loupe pressing a neat crescent above his eyebrow. Lamp light slanting across the green felt made the teeth shine like tiny sunrises, while the timing machine clicked behind him at six beats a second. He lowered a screwdriver the width of a pin and nudged the regulator screw, expecting that half-turn to erase the four-second gain he had charted. A wooden yardstick, faded to honey, rested against the cabinet farther back, a giant at the edge of this miniature province; even so, every shift shorter than one graduation mattered tonight. He slid the movement onto the tester, waiting for the pulses to settle into their even cadence.
The printed graph began to stutter; dark dots rose and dipped as though climbing uneven stairs instead of marching straight. Orla stepped from the doorway, wiping watch oil from her palms. “That trace looks restless,” she said, keeping her voice low so the parts tray would stay calm. Ned tapped the case, and the dots leapt wider, the frequency sliding to a new wavelength that the earlier adjustment had never predicted. The neat calculation behind his half-turn loosened; his hand hovered, breath shortening until its tempo matched the wavering screen. Orla set a finger on the barrel bridge, steadying it. Silence pooled, broken only by the overlapping beats from the front clocks.
A bell from the shop door rang, its echo shaking the glass trays. That tremor flicked the mainspring barrel, and a coil no wider than an eyelash skipped from the tweezers, arcing into the felt forest. For a breath the repair seemed to hang in the balance; without the spring the wheel would never breathe. Ned’s hand froze halfway to the loupe. Orla crouched first, her eyes tracing the faint pulse of lamplight across the cloth until a glint answered. Together they angled a slip of paper beneath the coil; the steel tried to mimic the curve sketched beside Ned’s elbow, settling back into shape once it touched the tray again.
Ned returned the movement to the holder. This time he turned the regulator screw a quarter as far as before, the screwdriver lifted almost vertically instead of the earlier flat approach, and the balance wheel began to swing. Under magnification the pallet fork appeared to hang in the balance for a fraction of a beat, then the gears resumed their measured dance. The timing machine clicked; its intervals fell into a calmer cadence, each pulse blinking on the display at a steadier wavelength. Outside the desk lamp’s ring, the yardstick remained leaning, unchanged. Ned exhaled through his nose, placed the screwdriver on the felt, and let the overlapping ticks mingle with the faint hum of the display case.
