Every afternoon Zephyr pressed the brass leaf stamp onto the waiting cotton, trusting muscle memory rather than thought.

A meadowlark darted across the window’s rectangle of light and, for a blink, its shadow slid over the cloth; the movement broke the rhythm, so Zephyr glanced down and noticed a tiny chip along one edge of the stamp, a remnant he had not seen yesterday. The flaw looked harmless, yet the certainty he carried into the room thinned like warm breath meeting cool glass. He set the stamp aside, rubbed its brass surface with the heel of his palm, then lowered it again. A faint crescent of wax, thinner than a thread, trailed behind the proper outline, shining when the cloth tilted toward the sunlit floor.

The next press deepened the crescent into something recognisable: the curved back of a nymph, arms raised as if swimming beneath a river’s surface. Zephyr paused, shoulders tightening, and drew a slow breath—no guide corrected him, no voice commented on the slip, yet the silence itself managed to unsettle the air. "Bath is clear," Jasper murmured from the dye trough, voice low and even, then returned to skimming stray threads from the indigo. Zephyr nodded, hoping to make amends for the drifting crescent by stamping a truer line; instead, each press added another ghostly swimmer, an unintended procession moving along the border his mind believed finished before it began.

He lowered the cloth into the basin and the dye swallowed it soundlessly; indigo spread through every unwaxed fibre, while the waxed sections floated pale beneath the surface glare. When he raised the cloth, streaks of colour fled back into the trough, leaving a visible disagreement where pattern met dye: crisp leaves where the resist held, blue veins where thin cracks betrayed the cloth. The twin forces of intention and accident glimmered beside one another, neither erasing the other. Outside, daylight angled lower, amber now, drawing longer silhouettes across the stone floor as though the room itself questioned what belonged inside its lines.

Wax cooled, stiffened, and began flaking away with brittle snaps. Zephyr lifted a corner, watched the swimmers emerge fully white against the blue, their outlines imperfect yet strangely alive, and found no temptation to scrape them off. The plan from earlier in the afternoon drifted, leaving space he could not name. He spread a fresh length of cotton, positioned the leaf stamp once more, then paused—his fingertips hovered above the brass block, waiting for light to tip just a little further across the table.

蠟冷卻、變硬，開始脆裂脫落。澤斐掀起布角，看見泳者在藍底上以純白全然浮現，輪廓雖不完美卻帶著活氣，竟沒有想將他們刮去的衝動。下午早先的計畫飄散，留下無名的空隙。他攤開新的棉布，再次擺好葉片印章，然後停住——他的指尖懸在黃銅塊上方，等著光線在桌面再往前傾些。
