The district workshop stretched like a narrow nave, benches lining each wall and a clear aisle reaching the glass screen at the far end. Between plate and screen, floorboards showed the flattened tread of chair legs that once waited there. Jasper said those marks came from a district meeting held years ago, when the room served the town council instead of artists. Now only the press’s iron frame occupied the aisle, its arched top clearing the ceiling by less than a handspan. Zeke rested his stylus on the plate, waiting for the stripe of light to leave enough shadow to show each scratch.

He began; the blunt steel point crept through the soft wax, opening copper in narrow paths that forked and rejoined like tiny canals. Wax ribbons curled under the tip and drifted to the bench edge, where unused styluses formed a silent bystander effect, shiny yet inactive. Gemma leaned over the neighboring bench, aligning damp paper beneath felt blankets with the slow care of routine. “Ready for the first pull?” she asked, her voice steady and unhurried beneath the ceiling’s echo. Zeke paused, lifted the stylus, and compared the drawn maze with the room’s long aisle, noticing how both narrowed toward the screen.

Jasper carried the plate to the glass shield; Zeke stayed behind the marked line and watched the distant rectangle of copper darken where the acid bit. Minute by minute, the exposed lines deepened, turning the stripe of sunlight into a ladder of reflected sparks along newly roughened grooves. When Jasper returned the rinsed plate, water pools slid across the surface then vanished, revealing nothing more than faint depressions. Zeke laid the metal on the press bed, rolled ink across it, and felt resistance rise as sticky pigment filled every channel. He started the crank, but halfway through the rotation his wrist slowed; the press handle balanced level while he listened to the roller settle on distant bearings. Something in the hush made the aisle feel longer, the ceiling higher, as though the building itself inhaled.

He resumed the turn; felt the roller cross, blankets compress, paper stretch into the etched valleys. Gemma lifted the blanket for him, and the damp sheet clung to the plate before peeling away with a soft sigh. The printed maze shimmered, reversed, its corridors now matching the pressed floorboards that ran from bench to screen. The old chair marks, once idle scratches in wood, aligned exactly with the darkest corners of the image. Zeke let a slow breath flow out; no one in the long room spoke. His fingers hovered above the fresh ink, a millimetre from touching the raised lines.
