From the threshold, Hartley watched Hattie angle her shoulders over the etching bench, the ceiling vault rising overhead like an upturned boat. Light from a skylight spanned the room in a broad rectangle, leaving the corners in quiet dusk. The table occupied the center of that rectangle, its surface wider than Hartley’s outstretched arms and clear enough to overlook every corner of the wax-dusted copper plate resting there. A blunt stylus moved in Hattie’s hand, carving through the dark coating; tiny ribbons curled, drifted, and settled close to her wrist. Beyond, the press waited against the far wall, its iron frame casting narrow vertical bars across the floor’s pale boards.
Hartley stepped inside and slid his own plate beside hers, the gesture folding his routine into the workshop’s larger rhythm. “I kept the tower within one span this time,” he murmured, placing a finger against the wax. Hattie answered with a brief nod, the only interruption in her steady regimen of line, pause, breath, line. The stylus she handed him carried a warmer grip than the air; its steel companion lay parallel, equally dull, waiting for bolder marks. Hartley lowered the tip and drew the familiar riverside warehouse he had sketched many mornings, yet the wax felt strangely unforgiving, resisting each curve by catching the stylus for a heartbeat before letting copper glow through.
Halfway along the roofline he paused; a shallow scratch crossed the wax where none belonged, thin as thread but running perfectly vertical. He lifted the tool, compared the accidental mark with Hattie’s confident strokes, and began adjusting the drawing, rotating the plate sixty degrees so the scratch aligned with a window edge. Ink preparation followed; the adult wheeled the plate behind glass, acid darkened every exposed groove, and soon the rinsed metal returned, copper glinting beneath ceiling lights. Hartley rolled ink across it, feeling the soft impact of rubber on metal, then wiped the surface clean until only the channels held color. Damp paper settled over, blankets layered, and the crank turned with slow, weighty certainty.
The first print peeled free, and the warehouse lay mirrored, its riverside dock now opening toward an unseen street, the stray scratch transformed into a chimney that balanced the entire façade. Hartley set the wet sheet on the drying board, palms hovering but not touching, and tilted his head as if measuring the span between paper edge and ceiling beam. The bench no longer served his hands; he placed the stylus beside its companion and let his arms drop to his sides. Over by the wall, the press’s heavy roller kept gliding forward under its own momentum, whispering across the blankets long after his grip had loosened.
Translation
