Two shallow dents marked the damp wood beside the basin, yet only one stool waited under the table. "Who took the other seat?" Tatiana asked the silent room, wooden pick hovering above the floating cocoons. She tapped the empty groove with her thumb. The faint outline hinted at regular use, like a ghost trace of weight that had once balanced hers. She lowered herself, the hem of her sleeve catching a droplet from the basin’s rim, then leaned forward until the water stilled again. Somewhere between cocoon and reel, a thin line of silk already shimmered, its gentle ascent toward the spindle promising order if her fingers stayed patient.
She found the filament end of a pale cocoon and guided it across her forefinger; the wet thread clung, cool and slightly gritty. Turning the crank with slow, even strokes began the incipient twist, three filaments joining just beyond her nail until a single strand took shape. The reel clicked; the cocoon shrank; still, silence filled the place where another voice would usually rise above the wooden floorboards. A breeze slipped through the doorway, pressing the loose cuff against her wrist and showing her how empty the second stool remained.
A soft scuff broke the hush, and Keira stepped inside carrying a quilted oven mitt, the kind used nearby to lift hot clay pots from the kiln room. Without comment, she folded the mitt over the crank handle, cushioning it, then positioned herself at the empty stool. "Still pulling too hard?" she murmured, tilting her head toward the sagging thread. The added thickness changed the angle of Tatiana’s pull, and an unexpected slack slithered through the line, knitting a small loop of intrigue between their hands. Keira steadied the reel; Tatiana adjusted the pick; together they salvaged the fabrication of the thread before the loop tightened into a knot that would waste the cocoon.
The loop dissolved; the strand straightened; the reel sang again in a steadier rhythm. Threads gathered, layering translucent bands across the frame until the basin’s water mirrored fine lines of light on the ceiling. A faint citrus scent from newly planed timber drifted from the window ledge and settled over the vegetal trace of silk, quieting every other smell. Keira’s shadow moved where none had fallen before, yet the other dent in the table stayed untouched. Passing the pick to Keira, Tatiana brushed the second indentation with the back of her thumb once more, this time letting the contact linger, the worn wood warm against skin that had cooled in the basin spray.
Translation
