The Bamboo Rod and the Blooming Dragon-

Story Content
English Original
Paloma’s wrist flicked the bamboo rod toward the taut cotton long before her thinking caught up with the movement. A chalk-dry taste brushed her tongue, drifting from a stack of fresh silhouettes resting nearby, and the electric lamp’s warmth mingled with a faint metallic tang rising off its wire cage. The rod’s tip landed true; a small bird shadow hopped across the screen in crisp profile, and only then did Paloma notice Tess lowering a squat air pump beside her calf, its brass pressure gauge still at zero.
Tess had the quick grin of an entrepreneur testing a prototype, and backstage whispers already called her an innovator. She clipped a slim battery pack to jumpstart the pump; the motor coughed, spraying a briny mist that settled on Paloma’s lips. Another taste joined the first—a mellow sweetness leaking from concentrated starch glue that held the leather joints—then a sharper, sour note as the pump’s hose rattled across the floor. Detail upon detail layered on her palate, each flavor adding weight to the moment while the gauge climbed, almost, yet not quite, touching its thin red line.
The dragon figure waited on its bamboo frame. Paloma pinched its rod and, without thinking, rocked her forearm in the slow, looping rhythm once used to whisk egg foam in her aunt’s kitchen. The practiced circle transferred perfectly; the wings lifted, the body rolled, and the shadow ballooned as Tess eased the pump back another handspan. Unexpectedly, the dragon’s outline stretched to the ceiling, edges fuzzing, dwarfing every other shape. Paloma halted, the rod hovering; dryness spread across her tongue, tasting of warmed leather and thin dust released by the sudden swing. The audience gasped on the far side of the cotton, a single breath that slipped through the fabric like steam.
Silence settled, thick and a little salty. Paloma lowered the dragon onto the wooden rack and let the bamboo rod lean against it. The same rod, now blotched with a bead of her own perspiration, left a faint mineral aftertaste when she steadied it with two fingers. Tess exhaled a quiet laugh somewhere behind her, yet the lamp continued its steady hum, and on the screen the last ripples of shadow shrank back into ordinary shapes.
Translation
