A crescent-shaped print, sharp as a coin’s rim, dented the dusty path beside the stone channel. “Did a goat slip through the gate last night?” Stella asked the quiet water, then crouched to study the mark. Moist clay clung to her fingertips, cool and gritty, while the channel murmured past at arm’s length. A frog blinked under the nearest sluice gate and leaped away, leaving the surface trembling in rings. Stella rose, brushed dust from her knees, and set both hands on the iron handle that arched above the water. The print lingered behind her like a small riddle, yet the gate in front carried the work of the morning.

She pulled; the swollen wood refused, and the handle’s rust-rough curve pressed a deep stripe across her palm. Water kept moving, indifferent, thinning into a silver sheet where the channel narrowed before the next gate. The simple logistics of weight and water met her strength at an impasse, the current tugging one way, the timber another. She exhaled through pursed lips, let go, and walked downstream, deciding the stubborn gate could wait until her arms warmed again. Frogs plopped from stone to water, unabashed recipients of the channel’s steady hospitality, their throats puffing like tiny bellows. Ahead, two side channels diverged, and the morning light flashed against damp walls as the water split.

At the junction, mats of buckwheat stems had drifted overnight and clogged the narrow mouth of the right-hand sluice. Stella squatted, scooped them aside, and felt the water slap against her knuckles before sliding under the freed arch. Leaves swirled, parted, reunited, sketching a curved intersection in the current that echoed the print up on the path. Her forearm paused mid-motion, the wet stems hanging like tassels from her grip limp. She turned the stems over once, noticing a shallow half-moon sliced through the mud coating their underside. The curve matched the gate’s handle exactly, iron against earth, not an animal at all. “So that’s where it came from,” she murmured, letting the stems float away downstream.

She walked back upstream, stones pressing ridges through her soles, while the channel beside her thickened with the water she had just released. The stubborn gate still waited, its handle wet now, moss darkening the grain where her earlier effort had scoured it clean. Instead of jerking, she wrapped both thumbs over the iron and lifted slowly, letting the rising water shoulder some of the weight. Wood sighed, moved a finger’s breadth, then climbed higher until a thin gush gleamed through the growing gap. Up on the bank, the earlier print softened under the fresh spill, and Stella eased the handle one last fraction, palm gliding over damp rust.
