English Original
Yorick stepped off the crushed-stone path and ducked beneath the striped awning of the cotton-candy cart. The moment his shoes left the gravel, a scoop of sugar rattled down the steel throat of the spinning drum, and he watched the hidden heater liquefy the crystals; the liquid vanished behind the perforated wall while the motor held its flat hum. He noted the tiny hiss, the pitch shift, the steady rotation, and filed a working hypothesis: heat plus flight would weave sweetness into air. Nothing yet appeared above the basin. The operator, Stella, stood aside wiping a cone, leaving Yorick alone with the machine, its surface gleaming like a low moon. He rested both hands on the cardboard handle and waited.
Another ladle of sugar slid in. The drum swallowed it without protest. Yorick remembered an article by a traveling kinesiologist who diagrammed wrist arcs for even layering, so he mirrored the sketch: elbows loose, forearms drawing slow circles just above the rim. Still, the cone stayed bare. He tightened control by pinching the handle nearer the paper collar, slowed the pattern, then quickened it, listening for texture in the hum the way some people listen for ripeness in fruit. Stella broke the quiet. “Closer, but not too close,” she said, voice as calm as the evening breeze. He lowered the cone until the edge almost skimmed the lip, yet only warmth lifted against his knuckles.
A third scoop met the heat, disappeared, and for one long breath nothing changed. Then a translucent thread leapt outward, snagged the rim, and snapped across the waiting cone like a violin string gone slack. The next rotation gathered ten threads, then fifty; the unseen reservoir had crossed some quiet line, and sugar burst into silk before Yorick’s eyes. The filaments clung, building layer upon layer until the cone swelled into a pale cloud. He glanced at Stella’s small nod and kept the circles steady; each pass deepened the lattice rather than thickening it. So the so-called rare delicacy rested not in flavor, he noted, but in the instant the unseen became visible.
The cloud ballooned until its weight threatened to fade from his grasp, so he lifted his free hand and sheared away loose strands, letting them drift toward the bulbs above. He did not propose the idea aloud; a quiet plan settled for tomorrow: arrive earlier, pour, wait, pour, wait, and watch the threshold again. Light organ notes mingled with the hum, and evening air cooled the sugar until faint frost sparkled along each filament. Cotton-scented breeze slipped along the lane; Yorick raised the finished cone and touched its feathery edge against the warm drum.
Translation
