Irving pressed his palm against the smooth spine of driftwood and gave it a slow twist; the wood scraped against wet sand with a rasp that blended into the hush of the outgoing tide. From the shingle ridge Blythe’s voice floated, "See the curlew?"—no louder than the bird’s own plaintive call. Dawn still lingered as a pale sheen on every water film, yet the wooden marker post, leaned just as it had on countless mornings, whistled faintly whenever a breeze threaded through its cracked grain. Irving’s boot heel sank, lifting a muffled gurgle from the mud, and a mussel shell popped underfoot like a distant cork.
He wedged a slim branch beneath the driftwood, searching for the best balance point. The branch bowed into a serviceable lever; each tentative push sounded with a creak that matched the gulls’ rhythm overhead. As he prepared to turn over the plank, a sudden clatter of pebbles made him pause—Blythe had tossed a stone toward a shallow pool, testing its depth. That pause formed a small friction in his body: hands tightened, then loosened, then tightened again. A thin channel nearby hissed as water escaped, its pitch rising and falling in irregular pulses that felt like the flat’s own regulation, measuring seconds without a clock.
On the underside of the driftwood, once lifted, a lattice of dried kelp clung in frayed knots. He had seen such knots many times, yet today a neat row of crushed barnacles interrupted the pattern as though some earlier visitor had scraped a blade along the grain. The familiar post at the high-tide line lined up exactly with that scar, hinting at a path he had never traced. Following the alignment with narrowed eyes, he noticed faint scratches on the sand—too straight for crab tracks, too shallow for cart ruts—already dulling as the breeze teased grains across them. Moving the wood revealed but also erased; a quiet catch-22 played out under his fingertips, the evidence fading even as it appeared.
Irving let the branch fall; it landed with a shy thud, and he stepped back until his boots reached firmer sand. His shoulders settled while Blythe crouched by the pool, flicking droplets that rang like tiny bells when they struck a tin bucket beside her. He watched without speaking. Behind them, the retreating sea kept its long hush, a low unbroken rush that slid across the flat and refused to wait for any observer.
Translation
