When the ranger straightened and walked off, the spillway cleared itself; water receded, leaving a damp outline on Owen’s boot leather. He unfolded, then folded the stool again, settling for a squatting posture that steadied his arm but numbed his calves. Lines gathered until the page felt weighted with grit. He stopped before the board slipped a final time.
