Story Content
English Original
Fresh sumi pooled on the stone dish, its surface swirling from slate to midnight.
Beside it, a rubber fish replica lay belly-down on the cedar bench, each raised scale catching brief flashes as the overhead light slid across the flank.
Ursula stepped into the compressed gap between bench and drying rack and lifted the wide brush.
Ink gathered along the bristles; a single bead slipped free, disappearing into the shallow valley behind the gill arch.
She ran the brush vigorously from head toward tail, watching black seep into every scale ridge.
The aroma of jasmine drifted through the open shoji and threaded around her wrists.
Above, the vaulted ceiling framed a rectangle of pale sky, yet down here the space felt enclosed, as if the bench itself had drawn close to watch.
She lowered a sheet of washi, aligning its edge with the replica’s snout before spreading her fingers to span the fish’s length.
Floyd, rinsing a brush at the stone basin, remarked, “The air feels crowded in here today.”
The corridor of air between paper and scale flattened under her palms, but a corner grazed the rack behind, reminding her of the room’s narrow clearance.
She pressed firmly around the deep gill hollows, then paused at the fin rays.
A memory of torn paper from yesterday still lived in the muscles of her hand, slowing the next push.
The first print came free with a dry whisper, bold and complete, yet its wet sheen left no place on the crowded rack.
Ursula slid it toward the far rail, and the sheet sagged, threatening to buckle; keeping the image safe meant surrendering half the bench for support.
Determined to pull a softer echo before the ink dried, she brushed a thinner coat across the scales.
The bench’s remaining strip of cedar now barely accommodated the new sheet.
She folded her arms for a breath, measuring distances—the drying rack behind, the ink stone ahead, the rubber tail jutting sideways—then chose to press on anyway.
The second print lifted paler, almost ghostly; where ink had thinned, pale shapes wove among the darker ridges, and one slim curve resembled a meadowlark mid-flight.
That unexpected figure held a quiet mystique, yet keeping it intact forced another trade: the wet sheet displaced the first, which wavered dangerously close to the floorboards.
She nudged the original print upward along the rack’s upper span and weighted its corners with two small cedar blocks meant for that purpose.
She accepted that the edges would ripple slightly as they dried.
The second sheet claimed the lower rung, its meadowlark shape hovering among fish scales like a thought that refused classification.
Behind her, the ink in the stone dish settled; no swirl remained, only a flat mirror catching ceiling beams.
Ursula slid the silent ink stone onto the narrow shelf above the bench.
